BIRMINGHAM, Alabama, Sept. 22, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) – Four people are dead and dozens of others reported injured in a mass shooting Saturday night in Birmingham, Alabama’s entertainment district.
According to the Birmingham Police Department, the shooting took place just after 11 p.m. “when multiple shooters fired multiple shots on a group of people” in the Five Points South area.
Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald, told members of the media, at least four of the gunshot victims suffered life-threatening injuries.
Fitzgerald said two men and a woman were found “unresponsive” at the shooting site when first responders arrived. All three were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth victim died at an area hospital.
The victims were all in the open when they were shot, Fitzgerald said. It was unclear if the shooters were on the street or fired from a passing vehicle.
The exact number of those who were shot was undetermined in the hours immediately after the shooting. Hannah Echols, a spokesperson for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, told CNN, 11 victims were being treated. The conditions of the victims have not been released.
