AUSTIN, Texas, March 21, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — The man considered to be the chief suspect in the Austin serial bombings is dead.

According to a statement by Austin Police Chief Brian Manley, the unnamed suspect, described only as a 24-year-old white male, was killed early Wednesday morning after detonating a bomb just as SWAT officers approached his car.

Chief Manley said investigators from the Austin PD, the FBI and ATF identified the suspect Tuesday night and were tailing him when he pulled his car to the side of the road.

Officers were making their way toward the suspect’s vehicle when it exploded.

At least one SWAT officer opened fire on the suspect. It has yet to be determined if the suspect was hit by the gunfire.

Investigators had located the suspect in an area hotel earlier in the night and were carrying out surveillance when the suspect got in his car and drove away.

A short while later the suspect pulled over along a frontage road where the deadly encounter with police took place.
