Breaking: Provo officer shot, killed while attempting to take fugitive into custody in Orem mall parking lot

OREM, Utah, Jan. 5, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are currently at the scene of a shooting Saturday night in which an officer was killed and the suspect was shot.

The incident started when police spotted a wanted fugitive in the area of Bed, Bath and Beyond at 50 W. University Parkway.

Provo Police Detective Nick Dupaix told Gephardt Daily when the officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, shots were fired and the officer, from the Provo Police Department, was hit in the chest and abdomen.

The officer died of the gunshot wounds.

Dupaix said the suspect was shot and is being treated in the hospital.

Detective Dupaix said the Officer Involved Critical Incident team is on scene and assisting in the ongoing investigation.

“At about 9:53 p.m. this evening, Provo Police received word on where a wanted fugitive would be at which was over at Bed, Bath and Beyond in Orem,” Dupaix said.

“Our officers responded out there to apprehend the suspect and while officers were attempting to apprehend the suspect there was a shooting that occurred.

“One of our officers was hit. He was rushed to the hospital where was treated for injuries.

“Unfortunately one of our brothers, one of our Provo police officers, succumbed to his injuries and has passed on.”

Dupaix said the officer’s identify would be released Sunday.
