CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Nov. 21 (UPI) — At least six school children were killed and many others were injured Monday afternoon after their school bus abruptly crashed into a tree in southeast Tennessee, authorities said.

The bus was carrying 35 students home after school in Chattanooga on Monday when it crashed into the large tree. The children on the bus ranged in age from kindergarten to fifth grade, The Tennessean reported.

Emergency personnel and police said via Twitter that there are fatalities, but no exact death toll. The Chattanoogan cited the Hamilton County (Tenn.) district attorney’s office in reporting at least six children are dead — five at the scene and one a short time later in a hospital.

Nearly two dozen other children on the bus were hurt in the crash, news reports said.

The bus driver was not injured and is being questioned by investigators, Chattanooga police said.
