AMERICAN FORK, Utah, Jan. 29, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — The fire department was called out to a water line break shortly after midnight, and when crews arrived, they discovered a gas leak as well.
American Fork Fire Battalion Chief Eddie Hales said the call came in at 12:13 a.m. Tuesday, reporting a water line break at 1121 N. 80 East.
He said responding units found a “significant” break, along with gas bubbling up through the water.
Three residences have been evacuated and others are on alert, he said.
The fire department is on standby at the scene while the city’s water department and Dominion Energy crews assess the situation.
At 1:30 a.m., Hales said the area is blocked off and it will be “at least two hours or so” before everything can be repaired and cleaned up. Although it isn’t a high-flow leak and only about five homes are in the affected area, the break is east of American Fork Junior High School, so crews are hoping to have things back in order before the school day begins.
In the event that repairs take longer than anticipated, Hales said, a message will go out on social media to alert the community.
The Red Cross has been requested to assist at least one of the displaced families.
