NEW YORK, Aug. 31 (UPI) — Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will meet with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on Wednesday in Mexico City.
The surprise private meeting will come just hours before Trump is due to give a highly-anticipated speech on immigration in Arizona. Nieto sent the invitation to Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton last Friday.
“I have accepted the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto, of Mexico, and look very much forward to meeting him tomorrow,” Trump tweeted Tuesday evening.
Nieto’s office confirmed the meeting in a tweet late Tuesday and later tweeted the goal of the meeting is to “promote the interests of Mexico in the world and, principally, to protect Mexicans wherever they are.”
The private meeting follow weeks of conflicting messages from Trump and his campaign on whether he will actually stick with his hard-line stance on immigration, like building a giant wall along the U.S.-Mexican border and creating deportation squads that would round up the approximately 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. and deport them.
