MADISON, Wis., Dec. 16, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The Madison Police Department is investigating a shooting that left at least five people dead at Abundant Life Christian School.
Police Chief Shon Barnes spoke to reporters, saying police responded at 10:57 a.m. (CST). Barnes said one of those found deceased was a juvenile student police believe was responsible for the shootings.
“When officers arrived, they found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds,” Barnes said. “We train on this almost quarterly. The last time we trained on this as commander was approximately two weeks ago.
“The protocols are simple, stop the killing, stop the dying, find out who’s done this. The officers did that. They did that. Adamantly.”
Abundant Life Christian School has students from kindergarten through high school ages, as well as adult staff members.
Barnes did not reveal the ages of those killed. He said those who survived have injuries ranging “from minor to life-threatening.”
He was alerted by an official during the live news conference that the number of dead, earlier reported as three, had been updated to five.
That number includes the suspected shooter, found deceased at the scene. No names or ages will be released until next of kin can be notified, the police chief said.
CNN is reporting a teacher is among the dead.
Barnes said a news conference planned for this afternoon will share additional details.
