Dec. 24, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Northern Utah is experiencing more than a white Christmas. Black ice under the newly fallen snow is causing a spate of crashes throughout the area.
Utah Department of Transportation has been reporting collisions and slide-offs on all interstate highways and state routes since early Sunday evening.
Side streets aren’t much safer, as the ice lurking beneath the powdery snow has vehicles and people on foot slip-sliding in all directions.
The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the western two-thirds of Utah and southwest Wyoming.
Snow will continue through Sunday night, with significant accumulation of 4 to 6 inches along the Wasatch Front from Ogden northward, the Cache Valley, across the Wasatch Back and into Wyoming.
Winter driving conditions last until midday Monday as snow persists across the area, tapering off in the afternoon.
If you’re driving on Christmas Day, be sure to leave early, watch your speed, and maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and others.
