Islamic State Hit with 24 Air Strikes by U.S., Allies
WASHINGTON, May 2 (UPI) — The United States and its allies launched 24 air strikes against the Islamic State in a 24-hour period ending Saturday, destroying IS buildings, vehicles and a supply cache, the Combined Joint Task Force said.
Coalition forces conducted 17 aircrafts over Syria using attack, bomber, fighter and remotely piloted aircrafts. Separately in Iraq, coalition forces conducted seven airstrikes used attack, fighter and remotely piloted aircrafts against the IS, officials said. The attacks took place Friday into Saturday.
The Syrian airstrikes near Raqqah, Kobani, Al Hasakah and Dair Az Zawr hit vehicles, fighting positions, tactical advantages, buildings and heavy equipment. In Iraq, the airstrikes near Mosul, Ramadi, Tal Afar, Fallujah and Bayji hit buildings, an IS supply cache and fighting positions.
“Raqqah and Mosul represent Daesh centers of power,” said Brig. Gen. Thomas Weidley, chief of staff for the military task force against the IS. “The coalition will continue to strike Daesh in these cities as we dismantle and ultimately defeat Daesh.” The IS is sometimes referred to as the ISIL, ISIS or Daesh.
Saturday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 52 civilians in the Syrian village of Ber Mahli died in U.S.-led coalition airstrikes.
