GRAND BASSAM, Ivory Coast, March 13, 2016 (UPI) — At least 12 people, including a 5-year-old, were killed when a group of gunmen opened fire on the beach at two hotels in the Ivory Coast resort town of Grand Bassam on Sunday.

Witness accounts on Twitter suggest up to four gunmen opened fire on the beach, located about 25 miles from the city of Abidjan. Some say up to 15 people were killed. The victims include at least five men, five women and one child, CNN reported.

The U.S. Embassy in Abidjan said officials are “monitoring the situation in Grand Bassam. No evidence that U.S. citizens were targeted nor confirmed reports of any U.S. citizens as harmed.”

The French Embassy said it set up a crisis center and asked people to limit their travel.

The resort town is a popular vacation spot for locals and Western tourists.
