SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah, Nov. 26, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A man has died as a result of an auto-pedestrian crash Tuesday night after he attempted to cross 3300 South.

Gary Keller, executive officer for South Salt Lake Police Department, said the call came in at 6:38 p.m., reporting the accident in the middle of the block at about 950 W. 3300 South.

Keller said the injured man was transported from the scene in “delta minus” condition, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The man, who was possibly 40 to 50 years old, had no identification with him, so police are still working to learn his name. Keller said he appeared to be homeless, and the incident occurred close to South Salt Lake’s new homeless resource center.

The crash occurred in a dark section of six-lane 3300 South, Keller said. It appears the man was crossing from north to south and was struck in the lane nearest the curb.

The male driver of the eastbound Infiniti that struck the pedestrian was the only occupant of vehicle, and Keller described him as “emotionally distraught” over the incident.

Keller emphasized that there was no distraction and no impairment on the part of the driver. He said the vehicle likely was going about 45 mph, which is the posted speed in that area.

“If the pedestrian had just gone half a block over to the crosswalk and the traffic light, he would still be here,” Keller said. “This was an accident that didn’t have to happen, if he had just gone half a block to the crosswalk.”
