LOGAN, Utah, Feb. 2, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Officers are investigating after a car-accident victim, discovered with stab wounds to his chest, died at a Logan hospital.

Logan City Police responded to the scene at about 7:45 p.m. Friday, after the man’s car ran off the road and into a ditch just outside Logan city limits, on State Route 30, a few blocks west of the border.

The man, whose car was headed west, was found unconscious in the Chrysler 300 sedan, Sgt. Lawrence Hopper, Utah Highway Patrol, told Gephardt Daily. The UHP took the case over once it was discovered it was outside of Logan.

A Logan police officer broke the window to gain access to the car, in the process suffering a deep cut to his hand.

Capt. Tyson Budge, spokesman for the Logan City Police Department, said the officer was treated at the hospital and released.

“He broke the window out and sliced his hand pretty good,” Budge said. “He had to get stitched up.”

The man in the car, who was reportedly found slumped over the steering wheel, was transported to Logan Regional Hospital, where his stab wounds were discovered. The man died shortly after arrival at the hospital.

The State Bureau of Investigation was called in Friday night to join the investigation. Hopper said all cases involving a fatality are turned over to the SBI.

Hopper said an autopsy will be scheduled for the victim, probably today, and the man’s name will be released afterward.

“We don’t know if the victim died from the crash or stabbing,” he said. “We are not releasing the name until the autopsy is performed. We don’t know if it was a homicide or a suicide. The investigation is ongoing.”

Gephardt Daily will have more information as it becomes available.
