SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 29, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management announced Friday it has eliminated the east parcel of the Salt Lake City site from consideration for Utah’s new correctional facility.

The DFCM statement release Friday said the division will now focus solely on the west parcel of an area selected by the Prison Relocation Committee last summer.

The City Council has opposed the prison move to the city, calling it in an opposition statement in 2015 a proposal “remote from the public interest.” The prison location is within District 1.

“Building a prison in our City’s Northwest Quadrant is problematic on many fronts,” James Rogers, Council Chair and District 1 representative, said in the prepared statement. “We want to make sure this overall move isn’t a tax burden to city residents.”

“This decision to choose a western parcel is more environmentally acceptable than the eastern portion as we look to advance the economic opportunities of City’s largest quadrant of undeveloped land.”

The DFCM release said the east parcel was ruled out because of environmental concerns and site costs, including issues surrounding the existence of an abandoned landfill.
