SYRACUSE, Utah, Nov. 8, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A Salt Lake City Police officer from Davis County has been booked into jail on suspicion of crimes against children.
Jonathan Isaac Dew, 39, was taken into custody on Wednesday after an investigation by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Investigators say Dew downloaded child pornography files.
Dew was booked on three counts of exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony.
On Oct. 20 of this year, agents of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received requests to download files of known child pornography, which featured a toddler-aged child being abused by an adult male and female, a probable cause statement says. More than 10 files were requested.
Investigators got a court order to get the IP address from the Internet provider. The address traced back to a residence in the Syracuse area. A search warrant was executed, and officials encountered a woman and children. A silver HP laptop was previewed on the scene, and investigators say links to files pertaining to child pornography were identified.
The woman at the home told officers the laptop belonged to her husband, Dew. He was contacted in Salt Lake City, at his job at the police department, and was interviewed. After listening to his Miranda Rights, Dew requested an attorney.
The files were found to contain graphic images of adults engaged in illegal acts with prepubescent children. The probable cause statement notes that the children shown being exploited are in the same age range as Dew’s children, who are 4 to 6. At least one child in a downloaded file was 2, the probable cause statement says.
The files were found on a computer in a closet in a room frequented by Dew. During their investigation, ICAC Task Force members also found a large number of firearms in the residence, and learned from family members that Dew suffers from depression.
Dew is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
