WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah, May 13, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A Southern Utah man is in the Washington County Jail after being charged with offenses against a child.

Jason Nez, 48, has been booked on one count of sodomy on a child, a first-degree felony, and lewdness involving a child, a class A misdemeanor.

According to a probable cause statement, Nez had been out drinking on May 6 when he went to a home on the Shivwits Reservation, where he was known. The mother of 2- and 3-year-old girls, who were in their bedroom, heard suspicious noise over the baby monitor.

She entered the bedroom and saw Nez performing a sexual act on the younger child, the probable cause statement says. The older child was also awake.

“The mother of the children confronted Jason and they left the bedroom and had an altercation regarding the incident,” the statement says. “Jason left the house, and the victim’s mother did not know where Jason had gone.”

The mother later took her children to a safer location and called police, the report says. On May 9, Nez called police and said he was ready to turn himself in. Deputies picked him up and read him his Miranda Rights, the statement says.

Nez said he did not have strong memories of what had happened, but understood that he did something wrong.
