LUBBOCK, Texas, Oct. 9, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Texas Technical University was on lockdown Monday evening, after a shooting was reported on campus at the Texas Tech Police Department.
The university later confirmed that a Texas Tech police officer was killed, and the suspect fled on foot, prompting the immediate lockdown of the campus as officials searched for the shooter.
Through a series of tweets, the school’s office of communications kept the university community aware as the situation progressed.
“Following a student welfare check, Texas Tech Police Officers brought a suspect to the police station for standard debriefing. During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer. The suspect fled on foot and is currently still at-large,” a tweet said.
Students and faculty were advised to take shelter in a safe place while officials searched for the suspect.
At 8:59 p.m. (local time), the university issued a statement:
“Earlier this evening, Texas Tech Police made a student welfare check. Upon entering the room, officers found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Officers brought the suspect to the police station for standard debriefing. During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer in the head. The officer is deceased. The suspect fled on foot and is currently still at large. Texas Tech University campus is on lockdown.”
An all-clear was announced at 9:34 p.m. when officials informed everyone via Twitter that the suspect had been apprehended.
The Lubbock Police Department tweeted that a TTU police officer was able to tackle the suspect as he fled, and LPD officers arrived on scene to assist.
The local Fox News station stated that officials identified the suspect as Hollis Daniels, a student at the university.
