NEW YORK, May 9 (UPI) — Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump named New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as chairman of his transition team to the general election Monday.
“Gov. Christie is an extremely knowledgeable and loyal person with the tools and resources to put together an unparalleled transition team, one that will be prepared to take over the White House when we win in November,” Trump said in a statement.“I am grateful to Gov. Christie for his contributions to this movement.”
Christie will oversee an extensive team of professionals “preparing to take over the White House, and all that entails, in the fall,” the release said.
Christie said, “I am honored by the confidence being placed in me by Mr. Trump and look forward to putting together a first rate team to assemble an administration to help best serve the president-elect and the nation.”
Christie dropped out of the presidential race after finishing sixth in the New Hampshire primary. He later endorsed his former rival.
Earlier, Trump announced plans to help Christie pay off his campaign debts with a rally.
The event, scheduled for Tuesday, costs $200 per person and will be held in Lawrenceville, N.J. Christie’s campaign reported more than $400,000 in debts and around $287,000 in cash in March, according a Politico report.
