WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, April 22, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Highway Patrol has identified the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash on State Route 201 in West Valley City early Friday morning.
UHP Cpl. Andrew Battenfield said the suspect, Carlos Quintana-Lozano, 36, was arrested later Friday afternoon and is currently being held in Salt Lake County Jail.
Battenfield confirmed that Quintana-Lozano has an extensive criminal history and was on parole at the time of his arrest in Friday’s fatal crash. The suspect’s parole officer participated in the arrest, Battenfield said.
Witnesses to the crash told officers that the suspect vehicle deliberately ran down the motorcyclist, David Lee Haines, 63, of Salt Lake City,
The deadly crash happened about 3 a.m. on SR-201 just west of Interstate 215, officials said.
Witnesses told UHP investigators that one or both of the vehicles had been driving aggressively prior to the collision.
“We have a witness who stated he saw both vehicles not maintaining their lane, as well as traveling at a little bit higher rate of speed than the rest of the traffic,” Sgt. Justin Dial, Utah Highway Patrol, told Gephardt Daily at the scene on Friday.
Additional witnesses saw the driver of the car walking away from the scene, Dial said.
On Friday night, UHP posted a statement on Twitter, saying, “The suspect from this morning’s hit-and-run crash on SR-201 at 2700 West has been caught by our Operation Rio Grande Narcotics Unit. He has been arrested and will be booked into Salt Lake County Metro Jail. A great job done by your Troopers and SBI Agents.”
