CEDAR CITY, Utah, Oct. 1, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Police and Utah Highway Patrol troopers were at the scene of a fatal auto-pedestrian accident Sunday night on northbound Interstate 15 in Cedar City.

According to information released by UHP, a 12-year-old boy from Gilbert, Ariz., was trying to cross I-15, near milepost 57, shortly before 8 p.m.

The driver of a northbound passenger car didn’t see the boy and was unable to avoid hitting him.

The 12-year-old died at the scene.

The release says the driver of the car stayed at the scene and cooperated with troopers.

Due to the time of day, light conditions, and clothing worn by the pedestrian, it would have been very difficult to see him and no other contributing factors were evident,” the release states.

Troopers worked into the night attempting to determine why the boy was in the area and trying to cross the freeway. Family members were still being notified.

Traffic was diverted off the freeway, but I-15 has since been reopened. Drivers should keep in mind that troopers will return to the scene on Monday to continue the investigation.

Gephardt Daily will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
