PROVO, Utah, July 11, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The Provo fire marshal says 18 people were injured July 4 when fireworks at the Stadium of Fire show shot into the crowd at BYU‘s LaVell Edwards Stadium.

The number of those injured was reached by compiling reports from first responders at the event, as well as public response through media channels and targeted emails sent to ticket holders, according to a news release Thursday from Provo Fire and Rescue.

“It is unfortunate this occurred, and we are thankful the injured are recovering,” Provo Fire Marshal Lynn Schofield said.

The extent of the injuries sustained was not disclosed.

Provo police previously said as many as three people were taken by ambulance to a hospital following the incident. Others were treated at the stadium, according to police.

The mishap occurred moments after the jet flyover at the stadium about 8:30 p.m. when a number of fireworks “went sideways into the crowd,” said Janna-Lee Holland, Provo Police Department public information officer.

The show stopped for about 20 minutes after the malfunction, Holland said.

At least 40,000 people were in attendance at the sold-out show, she said.
