ROSE CANYON, Utah, Aug. 18, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A new wildfire was sparked Saturday afternoon in Rose Canyon, in an area southwest of Herriman.

According to information from Unified Fire Authority spokesman Ryan Love, the fire started at about 3 p.m. in the area of 800 W. Step Mountain Road (16250 South). Lightning is a suspected cause.

Love told Gephardt Daily at 5:30 p.m. that 432 households had been notified of the voluntary evacuation.

“There is a gate at 14101 Shaggy Mountain Road, and everything south and west of that gate, we have a voluntary evacuation taking place,” he said.

Ten crews of about four firefighters each are battling the blaze, Love said, and additional crews from Camp Williams have volunteered as well.

Two helicopters are being used to dump water on the flames, which are high on a ridge. Grass and juniper are the main fuels for the fire.

Herriman City began posting alerts on its Facebook page at about 5:15 p.m., and promised to keep residents updated.
