WASATCH COUNTY, Utah, Oct. 1, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman and a 3-year-old girl are confirmed dead, and a second child who was in the car is in unknown condition after a collision at 2:41 p.m. Tuesday on state Route 40, near Heber City.

Sgt. Cameron Roden, Utah Highway Patrol, told Gephardt Daily that some details are still unknown, due at least in part to spotty cell service in the area.

“This is on Highway 40, at about mile marker 36. There was a white pickup truck pulling a trailer that was going one direction — we think it was southbound, but we’re not 100% sure yet,” Roden said.

“Another vehicle, a white or blue Passat, was going the opposite direction, and we’re trying to determine which vehicle crossed over, but the Passat was struck in the driver’s side by the pickup truck.”

Roden said another juvenile in the Passat survived the crash, but he had been unable to confirm that child’s condition. Reports from the scene did say one person was airlifted to an area hospital, reportedly Primary Children’s Hospital.

Regarding the cell service, Roden said there was no service at the site of the fatal crash, “so they’re having to go away from the crash site in order to call, make phone calls and stuff. So information is kind of coming in slow.”

Roden said he was unsure of the condition of the driver or potential passengers in the larger vehicle, the white pickup.

“I’m not quite sure yet, but we do want people to know Highway 40 is closed in both directions at the crash scene, they’re allowing cars to turn around and go, but yeah, it is closed both directions.”

Gephardt Daily will have more details as facts can be confirmed.
