MIDVALE, UTAH – October 30, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A man who opened fire on police officers outside a Midvale bar Friday night has been seriously wounded.

A second suspect is in custody.

According to Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder, a Unified Police officer on regular patrol spotted a stolen vehicle outside the Mousetrap Bar near 7200 South and 180 West around 8 p.m. Back-up officers from UPD and UHP had just arrived when a man emerged from the bar and began shooting.

Winder said a Unified Police officer returned fire, seriously wounding the assailant, while a second man ran from the bar only to be taken into custody less than block away.

One of the Unified officers sustained minor injuries from flying glass but was otherwise okay.

The suspects in the shooting have yet to be identified.

Salt Lake City Police have been called in to handle the investigation as per a new state law requiring outside agencies to oversee inquires into all officer-involved shootings.

We’ll have more on this story as information becomes available.
