DES MOINES, Iowa, Feb. 2 (UPI) — Hillary Clinton emerged the winner of the Iowa Democratic caucuses late Tuesday morning, more than 12 hours after gatherings across the state wrapped up.
Some of the contests between Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders had to be decided with a coin toss according to the Iowa Democratic Party.
Clinton’s narrow win over Sanders means both candidates now face the prospect of an extended fight for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Sanders holds a strong lead in New Hampshire, where voters will cast their ballots a week from Tuesday, on Feb. 9.
Nevada holds its Democratic caucuses on Feb. 20 and the South Carolina Democratic primary is a week later. Clinton is expected to fare better in those more diverse electorates.
Clinton spoke at a rally in Nashua, New Hampshire, earlier Tuesday before the announcement of her narrow victory. She sounded confident and ready for a Town Hall style debate scheduled for Wednesday night on CNN.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, seized first place in the Iowa caucuses among Republicans, Monday night. Cruz won 28 percent of the vote, compared to Trump’s 24 percent and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. took a close third place with 23 percent of the vote.
Dr. Ben Carson won 10 percent of the vote and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., got 4 percent.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush had 2 percent of the vote.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee dropped out of the presidential race shortly after his poor showing in the Republican caucuses. Ohio Gov. John Kasich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie didn’t stick around for Iowans to caucus, they were already on the ground campaigning in New Hampshire on Monday evening.
