SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 4, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) —  Eight residents in six separate apartments were displaced after an early morning fire in Salt Lake City Monday.

Jasen Asay, spokesperson Salt Lake City Fire Department said the two-alarm fire started just after 2 a.m. at 2015 S. 200 East in one of the third floor apartments.

“When our crews arrived they found several people had already evacuated and heavy fire in one of the apartments,” Asay said.

“The fire did not spread to any other apartments our crews did a great job of getting the fire under control within about 20 minutes.”

Asay said they knew the materials the apartment was made out of was non-combustible materials, meaning the interior walls were made of cinder block and the roof was metal so that would prevent the actual fire from spreading to the other units.

“We were able to shelter in place several residents on the north end of the building, while residents on the south end of the building were evacuated,” Asay said.

“There was one occupant who reportedly jumped from the second story window and our crews treated him at the scene and was not transported to the hospital.”

Asay said the firefighters were able to contain the fire within 20 minutes after arrival, but, five other units were affected with smoke and water damage.

Utah Red Cross has been working with several displaced residents to find a place to stay until they can return to their apartments..

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There is currently no estimate on the amount of damage.
