March 4 (UPI) — Former One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport Friday night and charged with misdemeanor battery.

People magazine said police took the 25-year-old recording artist into custody shortly before midnight local time and released him about an hour later.

Tomlinson was arrested after he allegedly pushed a male photographer, who fell and was allegedly injured. The singer and his girlfriend Eleanor Calder were surrounded by photographers in the airport’s baggage claim area.

“The paparazzi provoked and caused the altercation that occurred with Louis,” a representative for Tomlinson told TMZ. “It’s not the first time that a paparazzi has created an altercation with a celebrity. While the altercation was going on with the paparazzi, three other individuals were attacking his girlfriend during this incident and he came to her defense.”

Tomlinson is due in court to answer the charge on March 29.
