Hundreds without power after pickup truck slams into utility pole in West Valley City

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Nov. 15, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Nearly 450 West Valley City families are without electricity after a pickup truck slammed into a utility pole and downed power lines near 3610 South 4400 West early Friday morning.

West Valley City Police Lt. Bill Merritt told Gephardt Daily officers were called to the crash site about 12:45 a.m. When police arrived, they found a heavily damaged pickup truck and a power pole that had been snapped in two.

According to Merritt, neighbors reported seeing a woman approximately 20 to 25 years old leave the vehicle and jump a fence before disappearing into the darkness.

K-9 units were called in to search the area but came up empty.

A couple of hours later, however, police were called back to the area, where the woman was found hiding in a neighbor’s backyard.

Arresting officers reported the woman had been injured in the crash. She was taken to Jordan Valley West Hospital for treatment.

Rocky Mountain Power workers hoped to restore electricity quickly, but said it could take hours before power was back on.

Investigators say they found evidence inside the truck leading them to believe the driver was impaired.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information becomes available.
