NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 23 (UPI) — At least one person is dead after a major storm system whipped up tornadoes in Louisiana and Mississippi, and possibly in Alabama and Florida, officials said.

The victim, who was not identified, died as a result of high winds in a rural area near Purvis, Miss. Radar showed a tornado possibly touched down in the area, authorities said. Some injuries have also been reported.

The storm system continues to move through the South with more tornadoes possible Wednesday from the Gulf to Atlantic coastlines. Tornado watches and severe weather alerts have been announced across Alabama.

The National Weather Service confirmed at least six tornadoes in Louisiana, causing damage to homes and trees, and power outages for nearly 29,000 customers Tuesday evening.

The NWS confirmed another tornado near Poplarville, Miss. and it is reviewing reports of at least three others in Louisiana.

The elements for “a potentially significant severe weather event,” threaten Atlanta, with the possibility of isolated tornadoes, overnight into Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.
