BBC Mistakenly Tweets that Queen Elizabeth has Died
LONDON, June 3 (UPI) — Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II is alive and well, contrary to a tweet mistakenly sent by a BBC reporter on Wednesday.
Ahmen Khawaja posted to Twitter that the queen “has died,” a report quickly amended to “False alarm to Queen’s death! She is being treated at King Edward 7th hospital. Statement due shortly.”
Neither message was correct, and the tweets were quickly removed, Khawaja claiming it was part of a prank. The BBC corrected that information, as well.
“During a technical rehearsal for an obituary, tweets were mistakenly sent from the account of a BBC journalist saying that a member of the royal family had been taken ill. The tweets were swiftly deleted and we apologize for any offense,” a BBC spokeswoman said.
The Queen, 89, actually visited a hospital Wednesday for a routine appointment, which Buckingham Palace only reported to alleviate any public concern.
Khajawa will face an internal investigation by the BBC.
