OUT SKERRIES, Scotland, Dec. 4 (UPI) — An online campaign is seeking to send hundreds of Christmas cards to “Britain’s loneliest schoolboy,” a 10-year-old who is the only child living on a Scottish island.

BesottedScot, a moderator on Reddit’s Scotland subreddit, is organizing the effort to have Redditors the world over send Christmas cards to Aron Anderson, 10, the only child living on the island of Out Skerries, which has a population of about 75.

The moderator said he learned about Anderson from a November article in The Telegraph that called him “Britain’s loneliest schoolboy.”

“We should do something to make him feel less lonely, let him know that he has friends on /r/Scotland who are thinking of him this Christmas,” BesottedScot wrote on Reddit. “I took it upon myself to organise something nice for him. I thought it would be very nice if we as a subreddit sent him some Christmas cards!”

The post soon went viral on the site, with users as far away as New Zealand and the United States joining the effort and pledging to send cards.

BesottedScot requested the cards be mailed Dec. 7, so they will arrive around the same time.

“I’m in. I’ll share the thread. If this goes viral the postman is going to be raging. We’ll have to do something for Britain’s most perturbed post man next year,” Redditor autonomyscotland wrote on the site.
