GIRDWOOD, Alaska, Aug. 5 (UPI) — An Alaska woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries Tuesday when a grizzly bear mauled her while she was jogging on the Kenai Peninsula, law enforcement said.

Gabrielle Markel, 20, was jogging with co-worker Kaitlin Haley, 26, on a trial near Skilak Lake when the bear emerged from the thick brush and knocked Markel to the ground, the Alaska Dispatch reported.

Haley ran back to the Alaska Wildland Adventures lodge, where both women work, to get help. By time fellow lodge workers made their way to the Cottonwood Creek Trail where the attack happened, Markel was already walking back.

“She didn’t appear to have life-threatening injuries at the time but they can turn life threatening,” police spokeswoman Megan Peters told NBC News. “It’s always important to get them to the hospital as soon as possible.”

Markel was transported to Providence Alaska Medical Center where she was listed in good condition Wednesday. Central Emergency Services Capt. Terry Bookey said Markel was treated for bites and scratches to her head, back and arm.

Tom Timmel, the general manager of the lodge, said bears are seen in the area from time to time but employees have used the trail for 15 years without any previous incidents.
