JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 9 (UPI) — A Florida woman was shot through the torso Tuesday while driving — and it appears her 4-year-old son, sitting in the back seat, is the one who pulled the trigger.

A sheriff’s deputy became aware of the situation when he saw the woman behaving frantically inside her vehicle Tuesday afternoon, authorities said in a news release.

When he asked what happened, she told him she’d been shot by her young son.

“She was shot through the seat and the round went through her back,” Capt. Joseph Wells said of the bullet that went through the young mother’s body.

A handgun was subsequently found on the back floorboard, officials said.

The woman, Jamie Gilt, 31, was hospitalized in stable condition. The boy was not harmed.

“There was a booster seat in the back of the vehicle, but the boy was not strapped in when the deputy got to them,” Wells said.

It wasn’t immediately clear why the child was in such close proximity to the firearm, but authorities said Gilt did not know the boy had the weapon at the time it was discharged.

The Florida Times-Union reported Wednesday that Gilt might be the same person who posted to Facebook a day earlier a message that said she allows her 4-year-old son to use a small-caliber handgun to shoot targets.

The Facebook page belongs to a person with the same name, Jamie Gilt, from the Jacksonville area. The page includes several pro-gun messages, the Times-Union report said.

“All of ours know how to shoot too. Even my 4-year-old gets jacked up to target shoot the .22,” the message, posted Monday, said.
