Pennsylvania Man Rides 11 Miles on Hood of SUV

SPRINGDALE TOWNSHIP, Pa., April 21 (UPI) — Pennsylvania State Police arrested a man accused of driving more than 11 miles through seven communities with another man clinging to the hood of his vehicle.

Police said Dwayne Harvard, 46, struck fellow Pittsburgh resident Steven Sutton, 36, with his sport-utility vehicle in Springdale Township following an argument Sunday. Sutton held on to the hood of the vehicle while Harvard drove more than 11 miles through Springdale, Cheswick and Harmar Townships.

Investigators said there were multiple 911 calls from drivers on Route 28 who reported seeing the SUV with a man on the hood before Harvard called 911 himself.

Dispatchers directed Harvard to Harrison, where police detained an interviewed both men.

Harvard was charged with simple assault, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and DUI. Sutton was released without charge.

Harvard said he did not intentionally hit Sutton and the other man jumped onto the hood of his SUV when he tried to drive away. Harvard said Sutton was angry that he had been spending time with Sutton’s girlfriend Saturday.

“He took a cinder block and he was trying to hit the truck,” Harvard told WTAE-TV. “I said, ‘calm down. You put the block down.'”

Harvard, who had a female friend in the passenger seat, said he did not stop the vehicle for Sutton to get off because he feared the other man could be armed.

“I didn’t want to stop because if he had a gun, he could shoot either through the window and kill me and also kill her,” he said.
