San Diego Zoo’s Newborn Hippo Makes Video Debut

HippoSAN DIEGO, March 25 (UPI) — The San Diego Zoo announced the birth of a hippopotamus calf with a short video of the proud mama teaching her newborn to swim.

Jenny Mehlow of San Diego Zoo Global said the calf was born about 6:30 a.m. Monday to mother Funani and the newborn was observed nursing normally several times.

The zoo announced the birth Tuesday with a tweet and a Vine video showing the calf learning to swim. The sex and weight of the hippo are currently unknown as officials are giving the newborn and its mother space to bond.

Funani has 10 previous calves, four of which were born at the San Diego Zoo.

The calf’s father, Otis, was brought to the San Diego Zoo in 2009 to breed with Funani.
