Startled Beaver Makes a Jump for it at National Zoo

WASHINGTON, June 12 (UPI) — A North American beaver taking in his new surroundings at the National Zoo in Washington received a surprise welcome from one of his new roomies.

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo shared a YouTube video showing its newest resident, Birch the beaver, standing beside the water in his habitat in the American Trail exhibit when another curious beaver sneakily swims up behind him.

The other beaver, Chip, gives Birch a shock, and the startled beaver makes a surprised jump that lands him in the drink.

“Birch’s exhibit mate, Chip, gave him quite the surprise welcome, but he recovered from the ‘hello’ just fine,” the video’s description reads.
