Toscano’s Take on DVD Releases

Three Oscar nominated films are being released onto DVD and Blu-ray today. Let’s begin with Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Kinghtley  as they star in “The Imitation Game”

The Imitation Game“THE IMITATION GAME”

Cumberbatch takes on the role of Alan Turing, the genius British mathematician, logician, cryptologist and computer scientist who led the team who cracked the German Enigma Code that helped the Allies win WWII.

The film was nominated for 8 Academy Awards including best picture and best actor Oscar and won for Adapted Screenplay.

Excellent performances by Cumberbatch and the cast. A must-see film. It gets an A and rated PG-13.

Wild“WILD”

Also on Blu-ray and DVD this week, Reese Witherspoon stars in “Wild.”

Based on the autobiographical book by Cheryl Strayed, Witherspoon stars as an emotionally devastated woman who decides to trek the thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone in order to come to terms with her life.

This is Reese Witherspoon’s best performance to date and well worth your time to see. The film was nominated for two Oscars, one for Witherspoon as Best Actress and one for Lara Dern for Best Supporting Actress.

“Wild” gets an A and is rated R

“INTERSTELLAR”

InterstellarChristopher Nolan’s Interstellar chronicles a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

Nominated for five Academy Awards, Interstellar won for visual effects.

Christopher Nolan’s attention to detail might have been the film’s major drawback, as the film seems to get mired down in all the scientific theories. That being said “Interstellar” is a visual feast and needs to be seen in the highest definition possible.

All said and done, “Interstellar” is a good film but not a great one. It gets a B and is rated PG-13
