NEW YORK CITY, Jan. 10, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — David Bowie, one of the most influential voices in rock and roll history, has died at the age of 69.

According to a statement posted on social media, Bowie died Sunday after a year-and-half long battle with cancer.

“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer,” the statement said. “While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

Bowie rose to fame in the early 1970s, with his breakthrough album, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.” Other memorable works include, “Let’s Dance,” “Space Oddity,” “Changes,” and “Suffragette City.”

Bowie released his latest album, “Blackstar,” just last Friday, the same day as his 69th birthday.
