NEW YORK, Dec. 9 (UPI) — Tom Holland is ready to give a fresh take on Spider-Man.
The 19-year-old English actor discussed the role with Variety at the New York premiere of In the Heart of the Sea. Holland will play Spidey in a new reboot slated for 2017, following Tobey Maguire’ and Andrew Garfield’s turns as the Marvel superhero.
“The only difference I’m going to tell you is that I’m way younger, and at the moment, there’s going to be both things from Tobey and Andrew’s character that I’m going to steal,” he revealed.
“But there’s one very specific path that [director] Jon [Watts] and I agree on and we’d like to take the character down and explore his background,” he added.
Maguire played the superhero in “Spider-Man,” “Spider-Man 2” and “Spider-Man 3,” while Garfield starred in “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Some fans remain skeptical of Holland’s youth, but the actor looks forward to proving his merit.
“Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it just gives me more motivation to prove them wrong when I do start shooting the movie,” he said. “And hopefully I will and it would be good fun.”
Holland will play young Thomas Nickerson in “In the Heart of the Sea,” which opens in theaters Dec. 11. The movie, directed by Ron Howard, is based on the real-life 1820 sinking of the Essex, an American whale ship from Nantucket, Mass.
“This was the hardest job I’d ever done but it was also the most fun I’ve ever had,” Holland wrote Tuesday on Instagram. “Thank you to all the crew who made this film possible and thank you for making it one of the most informative and enjoyable experiences of my life.”
