ATLANTA, July 13 (UPI) — More leisure time spent sitting was associated with a higher risk of cancer in women, even when accounting for health and other factors, but no similar association was found in men, in a new study by the American Cancer Society.

The high amount of time spent sitting in the U.S. has increased in recent decades, because of computers and video games, as well as changes in transportation, raising researchers concern about the association between sitting and cancer, researchers said in a press release.

“Longer leisure-time spent sitting was associated with a higher risk of total cancer risk in women, and specifically with multiple myeloma, breast and ovarian cancers,” researchers wrote in the study, which is published Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, “but sitting time was not associated with cancer risk in men. Further research is warranted to better understand the differences in associations between men and women.”

Researchers compared leisure time sitting to cancer risk among 69,260 men and 77,462 women, finding that more time sitting was associated with a 10 percent increase in risk for multiple myeloma, invasive breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. The greater risk was found after accounting for physical activity, BMI and other factors.

No association was found between sitting time and increased risk for cancer among men, and that further research would be needed in order to better understand the differences in associations between the two.
