SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 1, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 20-year-old man is facing a DUI charge after crashing his car into a building in a Salt Lake City residential neighborhood in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Salt Lake City Police Department Lt. Dave Cracroft said officials received a call at approximately 2:30 a.m. saying a car had crashed into a building near 900 E. 1300 South.

“What we found were two young guys, young 20 year olds, in this car, they had been drinking, they were driving very fast southbound here on 900 East,” Cracroft said.

They then attempted to turn eastbound onto 1300 South, lost control, went into a skid sideways and hit the White Elephant Exchange and Boutique.

No one was injured and there was no major structural damage to the building, Cracroft said. There are apartments on the upper floor of the building, he added.

“The people in the building were shook up to say the least,” he said.

Both men stayed at the scene and were cooperative with police. The driver is being processed for a DUI charge and the passenger is being cited for minor in possession of alcohol.

“In addition to the damage, they’ll be covering on the car and the building, several thousand there, DUIs run probably $10,000 or more, with no injury and it gets more expensive after that, so they’re looking at a lot of money,” Cracroft added.

The driver said to police that what threw him into a skid was a problem with his clutch.

Neither man has been identified.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
