SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 5, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — About 30 firefighters battled a warehouse blaze overnight in Salt Lake City.

Crews arrived at the scene, 111 Apollo Road (about 60th West) at 2:30 after passersby alerted authorities.

“First-arriving crews found fire on the rooftop of the structure,” said Cpt. Darren Baum, Salt Lake City Fire Department.

“The fire extended about 40 feet across the rooftop. We did get some heat to the interior of the building, hot enough that it activated the sprinklers inside.”

Crews were able to get water on the flames quickly, but high winds and the size of the fire meant it took some time to bring it under control, Baum said. He estimated the main blaze was out in 25 minutes, but crews continued to search for pockets of flames in the space beneath the roof, which included a couple offices and warehouse space.

The building was under construction, Baum said, and it was not yet occupied, so there was less contents to be destroyed by the fire and sprinkler water.

“There was structural damage,” he said.

The cause of the two-alarm fire was under investigation, as was the extent of the damage, Baum said.
