SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 23, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Charges have been filed against a 40-year-old Salt Lake City man accused of speeding through a red light and causing a critical-injury crash on Mother’s Day in Salt Lake City’s Foothill/Sunnyside neighborhood.
Salt Lake City police say Chase W. Pollock was driving a Toyota Highlander westbound on 1300 South near 2100 East about 5 p.m. May 12 when he ran a red light, crossed the double yellow lines and crashed into an oncoming Audi Q3.
The Highlander was traveling an estimated 92 mph at the time of the impact, which caused the Audi to spin several times before coming to a stop at a nearby gas station, according to charges filed Thursday in 3rd District Court. The posted speed limit in the area is 30 mph.
The Highlander ended up 370 feet from the point of impact, charges state. Pollock then got out of the Highlander and fled on foot, changing his shirt in the process, according to the charges.
Two people inside the Audi were transported to an area hospital with critical injuries, charges say. Both were wearing seat belts.
The crash was captured on security footage from a neighboring business, police said.
Witnesses were able to follow Pollock and detain him until police arrived, according to charging documents.
Pollock also was injured in the crash and remains at a medical facility, police said. He has been charged with:
- Two counts of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony
- Failure to remain at an accident involving serious bodily injury, a third-degree felony
- Speeding, driving on the left of the road when prohibited, and failure to obey traffic control devices, all infractions
The crash temporarily closed 1300 South from 2100 East to Sheridan Road, and 2100 East from 1300 South to Sherman Avenue, police said.
