WEBER COUNTY, Utah, Nov. 18, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A GoFundMe account has been established for the family of Bryce Ransom, the pilot injured when the single-engine airplane he was flying crashed Sunday along Interstate 15 in Roy.
Ransom is the father of two young children, and his wife, Chanae, is “expecting a new baby girl any day now,” according to the Ransom Family GoFundMe page.
Ransom was hospitalized with multiple broken bones, including both ankles, his ribs and sternum, hand and knee.
He is the sole support of his family and is facing a recovery period of several months, the GoFundMe post says.
Ransom is a flying instructor, and he and a student had taken off southbound from Ogden-Hinckley Airport in the plane Sunday afternoon.
The plane was unable to gain altitude and hit an advertising sign alongside I-15 before crashing, Roy City Police public information officer Stuart Hackworth told Gephardt Daily.
The aircraft came down on the freeway side of a fence at about 4500 South.
Hackworth said both men were transported to the hospital in critical condition but were expected to survive.
Southbound I-15 was closed for several hours while debris was cleared from the scene and an investigation was begun into the cause of the crash.
The plane, which has tail number N3206R, was involved in an incident in May 2018, when it made an emergency landing on the southbound lanes of I-15 in Riverdale.
In that incident, a student was practicing touch-and-go landings and the plane experienced a mechanical problem that caused it to lose power. The instructor took over the controls and was able to land the plane on the freeway.
The plane clipped a car, but no injuries were reported in that incident.
