SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 16, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A man fired at a pair of Salt Lake County cousins after they allegedly robbed him and his daughter at gunpoint, according to court documents.
A probable cause statement from the 3rd District Court of Salt Lake County said Buk Buk, 20, is facing two charges of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, as well as false information to a public officer, a class B misdemeanor. Buk’s cousin is a juvenile and will not be identified for that reason.
The statement said that on Saturday, the victim saw an ad on KSL for iPhone being sold by someone identified as Lil. The victim and Lil, later identified as Buk Buk, texted back and forth and agreed upon the amount of $290 for the iPhone. The victim planned to meet Lil at 3400 W. 5620 South, the statement said. The victim had gone to an ATM prior to meeting Lil and had withdrawn 14 $20 bills and had one $10 bill.
“The victim and her father arrived and went to the front door of the listed address and knocked but did not get an answer,” the statement said. “They walked back to their car and when the father opened the driver’s side door, Buk and his cousin approached him and brandished a knife and a gun. The father stated they demanded the money and saw a phone in the center console of the vehicle and told him to give it to them also.”
The father said the men then took his cell phone and $290 in cash and ran.
“The father was in fear for others lives knowing they had a gun and he produced his own handgun and fired three rounds in the direction where Buk and his cousin were running,” the statement said. The father and daughter described the two males who had robbed them to Unified Police officers as African American males in their teens. One male was wearing a burgundy doo rag on his head and the other male was wearing a black knit hat, they said.
Officers located two males matching the description of the suspects and they were taken into custody, the statement said. During their Post Miranda interviews Buk and his cousin claimed they were brothers and Buk said he was the one who made the KSL ad for the phone. Buk admitted to planning and committing the robbery with his cousin and stated he had a silver knife which had a two-inch blade and a silver and black semi-automatic style BB gun. He stated he threw the knife and gun while running from police.
While being interviewed Buk gave the officers a different name, the statement said. When the detective contacted the juvenile’s mother, she said that Buk was actually her nephew, and she raises him. The false name he gave was for another of her sons, who at the time of the alleged crime was home with her.
Buk then told the detective he was scared and so he gave the false name “so he would not get in trouble.”
Buk was transported to the Salt Lake County Jail with his bail set at $20,000.
