PARK CITY, Utah, May 25, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Apparently not yet ready to trust the weather, moose have extended their typical stay in the environs of mountainous Park City.
“People should be aware that moose are still on the loose in Park City, as many have not yet migrated to higher elevations for the summer,” the Park City Police Department advised in a Thursday afternoon statement online with a photo.
“One of our officers kindly encouraged these two female moose to move off the trail that runs along Park Avenue near Holiday Ranch Loop Road.”
Thursday night in Ogden, a young bull moose was spotted in a residential area, seen in several east bench locations reportedly before state wildlife officials tranquilized the animal with a dart gun for relocation up Ogden Valley.
The Park City department offered tips to stay safe if encountering a moose:
• Always give the moose a lot of space and watch its behavior.
• Never try to approach or feed a moose.
• Keep dogs leashed and under control at all times. It is against Utah law to allow dogs to chase or harass protected hoofed wildlife, like moose.
• Stay calm and do not run away. Talk, make your presence known and slowly back away in the direction you came.
• If a moose charges you or chases you, hide behind something solid (like a tree) or try to get inside a vehicle or building.
• If a moose knocks you down, curl into a ball, protect your head and lie still until the moose retreats.
