Update: Suspect in shooting on S.R. 201 in West Valley City facing attempted murder charges

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Sept. 22, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have arrested an 18-year-old in connection with a shooting that occurred Tuesday in West Valley City.

Agents with the Department of Public Safety’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) arrested Jimmy Lopez, of West Valley City, Wednesday night, according to a news release from Sgt. Todd Royce, Utah Highway Patrol.

SBI worked with the Metro Gang Unit to take Lopez into custody at a retail store in West Valley City, Royce said.

Police believe Lopez shot another 18-year-old who was driving an SUV on Tuesday afternoon on State Route 201.

Just before 5 p.m., the vehicles were traveling on S.R. 201 at about 3800 South when at least one shot was fired into the SUV driven by the victim. The SUV crashed.

Lopez was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and charged with attempted murder and the felony discharge of a firearm in the direction of a vehicle.
