SANDY, Utah, July 28, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — People in Sandy say a neighbor’s attempt at a controlled backyard burn nearly ended in disaster Saturday after two garages and a fence went up in flames.

Witnesses told Gephardt Daily their neighbors were attempting to burn weeds and tall grass around 1 p.m. when the fire got out of control.

Sandy City’s Deputy Fire Chief Derek Maxfield said crews could see the column of smoke as they left the firehouse, and by the time they arrived both garages and the fence had been destroyed.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames and kept them from spreading to nearby homes.

There were no reports of injuries.

Damage for the fire was estimated at $15,000 to $20,000.

Fire investigators say they are still conducting interviews and have yet to officially determine the cause.
