SANDY, Utah, March 11, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A calf died in a structure fire in Sandy Friday morning, officials said.

Deputy Chief Derek Maxfield of the Sandy City Fire Department said crews were called to the blaze at 10084 Altavilla Dr. at about 9 a.m.

“The structure is a detached barn with a garage in the lower section and a hayloft above,” Maxfield said. “When crews arrived the hay was burning and the structure was totally engulfed. We started attacking the fire, and were able to get it knocked down.”

There were horses and cows in the building and a calf in the hayloft area died in the fire.

A relative of the owners of the barn was on the scene and attempted to assist, with the help of a passerby, before crews arrived. The passerby was treated for smoke inhalation at the site.

Maxfield said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but investigators are on site.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as it becomes available.
