SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 10, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Approximately 30 people processing mail-in ballots at a government building in Salt Lake City were evacuated Thursday morning after a worker thought he found a suspicious substance in one of the envelopes.

Unified Police Department Detective Jared Richardson said at approximately 11:20 a.m., the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office — located inside the Salt Lake County Government Center at 2001 S. State St. — was notified of a possible suspicious substance that had been found.

Richardson said about 30 people were working in an office in the basement of the south building, processing ballots. He said one of the workers opened up a ballot and felt what he believed to be a powdery substance.

The workers were evacuated and kept isolated as investigators from the Salt Lake City Fire Department and the Salt Lake County Health Department examined the envelope. The health and fire departments were not able to find any trace of a powdery substance inside the envelope, but it has been taken by police who will investigate the matter further.

Workers were let back into the room by 12:20 p.m.
