LAYTON, Utah, May 19, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A crosswalk near Layton High School that was the site of a fatal accident in January has been improved with safety features.
On Jan. 11, BaiLee DiBernardo and Eric Baarz, both 17, were walking to school when they were struck by a pickup truck in a crosswalk at 199 N. Fort Lane.
Baarz was seriously injured, but recovered. DiBernardo’s injuries were fatal.
LeRoy Clark, 32, who hit the teens, was charged with distracted driving.
Layton City analyzed the crosswalk and found it to be in compliance with safety standards, but a nearby business stepped forward to fund additional improvements.
O.S.I. (Object Systems International), the business right next to the crosswalk, donated $5,500 (entire cost of the project) to enhance the safety at that crossing.
The money was used for additional pre-crossing signage, road paint and solar-powered pedestrian signs, all of which were approved by the Layton City Council.
